New Primary school opens its doors at Jubilee Park (Rogerstone)
Commissioned by Walters, the brand-new Jubilee Park Primary school recently welcomed its very first pupils. Part of the 100-acre Jubilee Park development in Rogerstone (near Newport), the school forms the education hub of a thriving and growing community.
Formerly the site of the Novellis Aluminium plant, the entire site has been extensively remediated and remodelled by Walters. Now a major housing development in South Wales, the school was part of the original development plans (under a section 106 agreement), designed to cater for the large number of young families expected to take up residence.
Councillor Gail Giles, (Newport City Council’s cabinet member for education and skills), said: “Jubilee Park Primary is a fantastic new school and this is a proud moment for everyone – staff, governors, pupils, parents, carers and, of course, the council.“I would like to thank all those who made this day possible, including the developers, and I’m sure this will be a very happy and successful school.”
The state-of-the-art campus includes several all-weather sports pitches and indoor facilities. Equipped with the latest and best of everything, including energy-saving technology, it represents all that is best in modern school design and building. BREEAM “Excellent” requirements directed the architectural approach and combined energy efficient building services.
Rogerstone councillor Chris Evans said: “I’d like to pay tribute to workers and council education staff for delivering our new school on time”. Walters
Walters has worked in partnership with local education professionals throughout the project, ensuring coordinated project delivery. Designed by Powell Dobson Architects, the facilities include: –

- external teaching areas
- SEN learning resource
- hall for multi-purpose use
- multi-function space
- ICT suite

The school accepted its first intake of five classes when it opened, though eventually capacity will expand to over 370 pupils. Foundation stage pupils will receive 1/3rd of a pint of milk daily and plans for a Breakfast Club are in the offing. Future arrangements for local sports and social clubs to rent the facilities out of school hours are currently in consultation.
