Mandy is currently based on our A417 Missing Link Project in Gloucester was keen to share her experience of working in the construction industry, operating heavy plant in what has traditionally been a male-dominated environment.
Mandy is currently operating 30 ton and 50 ton articulated dump trucks (ADT’s) at the A417 site in the Cotswolds. But Mandy hasn’t always worked as an ADT driver. She found out about the role through her partner Mark, who is also an ADT driver for Walters. Previously, Mandy worked in the health care industry helping people with mental health related problems and didn’t know anything about construction or opportunities to operate heavy plant.

Mandy spoke openly about her first day with Walters on the A14 project in 2017. She described feeling very nervous and apprehensive about driving heavy plant on her first day. Even though she had completed all theory and practical tests, Mandy said that driving for the first time on an active site and around other drivers was “very nerve-racking” at first. But it didn’t take long for her to build confidence, and she received a lot of support from fellow drivers on the site.
Before long, Mandy felt like a trusted member of the team and has never looked back! She has now worked on many Walters’ Projects over the past almost 8 years and enjoys helping others. “I love my job and would definitely encourage other women to consider a career in construction!”
Well done Mandy and keep on trucking!
