Over half term, we welcomed two trainee Civil Engineers from Coleg Gwent, Frazer and Jack, to our Bro Tathan Utilities Site.
Both are currently studying full-time for a BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering and joined our team for a week’s work experience, applying their classroom learning in a live project environment.
Over the week, they’ve had the opportunity to:
- Learn the importance of safe digging practices - including permits, CAT scanning, marking out trial holes, and surveying located utilities.
- Observe the use of a variety of setting-out equipment such as EDM, GPS, and rotating laser level.
- Use CAD and witness how its used within the construction process.
- Take measurements from engineering drawings to quantify procure materials.
Reflecting on his placement, Frazer said that “being actively involved has provided me with an excellent insight into the field of civil engineering. I have developed a key understanding of many different topics, such as the use of CAD software and understanding what happens on site.”
Jack also spoke about his experience, explaining that he “gained a great insight into Civil Engineering and a better understanding of the different roles everyone plays for the project to be successful. I especially enjoyed seeing the safety controls and surveying techniques in action.”
It’s great to see the next generation of civil engineers gaining valuable practical skills and understanding how theory applies on-site. Well done Frazer and Jack - and thank you to the team at Bro Tathan!
