PROJECT OUTLINE

Bellway Homes and the Vale of Glamorgan Council jointly identified the need to substantially improve the junction adjacent to the new Bellway Homes development at St Lythans Park, Wenvoe., Walters were appointed to undertake a particularly complex upgrade of a very busy road junction at Culverhouse Cross on the outskirts of Cardiff. Involving significant vertical and horizontal realignment of the existing carriageway, managing heavy peak period traffic flows and working with local businesses to avoid disruption to the nearby retail park

PROJECT DELIVERY

Significant roadway vertical and horizontal realignment of the roadway was undertaken to accommodate the extended Port Road Bus Lane, making traffic management very challenging. The new Port Road bus lane concludes the works associated with the Welsh Government “South Wales Metro” programme on this key route. The scheme aims also to enhance cycle and pedestrian facilities along the northern section of Port Road, with the aim of encouraging more people to walk and cycle along this corridor.

Walters worked with local authorities to successfully manage peak traffic flows (it”s a main arterial route to Cardiff Wales Airport), working around and diverting numerous known and un-known services encountered during the works. During the project a number of technical and off-plan challenges arose, every one of which was methodically and positively worked through by the management team and successfully overcome.

Local businesses were consulted and we worked their requirements for access into traffic management plans. This meant sometimes complex diversions and other protective safety measure for drivers, pedestrians and site workers

Nick Rolfe, Walters Group Contracts Director said “”As part of the integrated Delivery Team, along with the VOGC and Bellway, Walters are very pleased to have successfully delivered this key piece of infrastructure (including the bus lane), providing a greatly improved gateway between the Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff Wales Airport, the link to the M4, the City of Cardiff and beyond”
