Vale of Glamorgan Council “delighted” with complex road junction upgrade by Walters
This is the tab body content. It is typically best to keep this area short and to the point so it isn't too overwhelming.

Working with Bellway Homes and the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Walters have just finished a particularly complex upgrade of a very busy road junction at Culverhouse Cross on the outskirts of Cardiff.

The works involved:

  • Significant roadway vertical and horizontal realignment, making traffic management very challenging.
  • Successfully managing peak traffic flows (it”s a main arterial route to Cardiff Wales Airport).
  • Working with local businesses to minimise disruption
  • Complex diversions and protective measure for drivers, pedestrians and site workers.
  • Working around and diverting with numerous known and un-known services encountered during the works.

During the project a number of technical and off-plan challenges arose, every one of which was methodically and positively worked through by the management team and successfully overcome.

As part of the integrated Delivery Team, along with the VOGC and Bellway, Walters are very pleased to have successfully delivered this key piece of infrastructure (including the bus lane), providing a greatly improved gateway between the Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff Wales Airport, the link to the M4, the City of Cardiff and beyond” (Nick Rolfe, Walters Group Contracts Director).

The new Port Road bus lane concludes the current works associated with the Welsh Government South Wales Metro programme on this key route. The scheme aims also to enhance cycle and pedestrian facilities along the northern section of Port Road, with the aim of encouraging more people to walk and cycle along this corridor.

Through excellent communications, strong local liaison and a dedicated, professional workforce, this challenging and potentially disruptive project was delivered on time and in budget, even with significant delays to the project caused byunknown services. Walters worked collaboratively with Bellway, the Vale of Glamorgan Council and with statutory undertakers to bring the project back on track.

Councillor Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Building Services, Highways and Transportation, said: “I am delighted with the improvements made at Wenvoe: the new signalised junction will not only offer improvements for those travelling by car, but will also provide for those cycling and walking.”
