We are pleased to announce that our A46 Coopers Hill Southern Corner scheme, completed in 2021, has been shortlisted at the Ground Engineering Awards 2022 in the category ‘UK Project with a Geotechnical value between £500k and £1M’.

The A46 connects Stroud to Gloucester and the Brockworth Bypass via Coopers Hill. Approximately 1km south of Brockworth, a section of the carriageway – known as the ‘southern corner’ – was suffering from subsidence caused by landslips.

Walters acted as Principal Contractor for the scheme working collaboratively with Atkins who acted as Project Managers and provided technical supervision for client Gloucestershire County Council.

The scheme was extremely sensitive as it required the full closure of the A46 between Stroud and Gloucester in order to complete the works.

The team delivered a remedial structure comprising 42nr 750mm dia 12.5m long bored piles supporting a vehicle restraint system and addressing movement within the landslip deposits and the carriageway embankment to improve global stability.

Other multidisciplinary activities delivered by the team included:

• Relocation of existing STATS.

• Reconstruction and realignment of the A46 carriageway by 2m to the east over a 145m length.

• Capping beam constructed above the piles.

• Installation of a VRS along the capping beam.

• Installation of drainage within the full depth carriageway construction works connecting into existing drainage schemes.

Walters completed the works ahead of schedule and on budget within 12 weeks.

The award ceremony will take place in London later this year.
