EESW pupil visit to Pennant Walters

Pennant Walters recently hosted a visit to our site from Jeremy Morgan, South East Wales Co-ordinator, of EESW STEM Cymru (Engineering Education Scheme Wales Ltd). EESW is an independent registered charity running schemes to inspire and motivate young people aged 8 to 19 to choose careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and operates to show young people how valuable a career in engineering can be.

Jeremy bought along a group of children from the Lewis Girls’ School, a state all-girls school in Hengoed, and our session comprised a discussion about :-

benefits of engineering and employment opportunities
wind energy
renewables
group tasks including assembly of a tower, identifying largest users of energy, identifying new energy saving ideas.

We also took the group to visit Mynydd Bwllfa Wind Farm which is located 2.5kms to the south of the village of Hirwaun in Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough. At the site the pupils learnt about the civil engineering works associated with a wind farm and became very hands on !
