With a brand new Secondary school already constructed in the area to replace it, Llantarnam Comprehensive School became surplus to requirements and was earmarked for demolition. The site was acquired by developers Barratt Homes with consent for residential development. The sprawling complex of educational blocks, a leisure centre (including a 25m pool) and even a 15m high clock tower, would have to come down to make way. Barratt called on Walters to provide the necessary knowledge, experience, plant and equipment required to do the job.
Firstly, all asbestos-containing materials were removed from the buildings. This was followed by a full soft stripout of all remaining fixtures and fittings. One at a time, the structures were then systematically demolished by the skilled Walters team using specialist high-reach demolition rigs to access and reduce the tallest structures. Slabs and foundations were removed and 6,000m3 of hard arisings were crushed by Walters own mobile crushing plant and stockpiled on site for re-use in the redevelopment works.Once cleared, the site was re-profiled by Walters GPS controlled bulldozers, excavating, filling and compacting over 5,000m3 of
Once cleared, the site was re-profiled by Walters GPS controlled bulldozers, excavating, filling and compacting over 5,000m3 of subsoil. After just six short months, the site was cleared and declared fit for the residential development to commence, much to the delight of the client.
