Ben Snape-Johnson joined our team in the South West earlier this month. Ben has just finished the 3rd year of an MEng in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cardiff University and will complete his degree studies in summer 2025.
We recently caught up with Ben to hear about how his summer internship with Walters is going.
“I have been working on multiple active sites, all involving different types of civil engineering work. It’s been extremely beneficial in helping me understand the different subjects I’ve been studying in University.”
Ben has worked with our site team in Weston-Super-Mare where we are working for North Somerset Council to stabilise a retaining wall supporting a section of carriageway. He’s also spent time with our team at our North Town Bridge in Taunton where we are restoring a historic bridge in the centre of the town. “At North Town Bridge I gained an understanding of method statements and risk assessments and scheduling of works.”
Ben is currently on our A417 ‘Missing Link’ project in Gloucestershire, where Walters are strategic earthworks partners to Kier who are delivering the scheme on behalf of National Highways. Ben has been shadowing the site surveying team, working with the quantity surveyors and even getting to see the site from the passenger seat of an ADT!
“I think the experience I’ve gained on my internship so far has been invaluable and will help me to relate the subjects I’m learning in my final year of study with the practice I’ve seen in the workplace. This will also help massively towards confirming my thoughts on civil engineering as a career when leaving university.”
Well done Ben!
