A joint venture between Walters and Sisk has been selected by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to design and build their flagship Mountain Ash Cross Valley Link scheme.
The £8m scheme – scheduled for completion by 2020 – involves the construction of a new 60m bridge over the River Cynon and the Aberdare to Cardiff main railway line. The project also involves substantial carriageway redesign and realignment to provide a key link between traffic on the A4059 and the B4275, relieving congestion in Mountain Ash and in the wider area.
The Walters-Sisk JV will use their considerable civil engineering experience to design and construct the bridge structure and a traffic light controlled junction on the B4275. There will also be major improvements on the Miskin Road side, converting it from a one-way, single carriageway road, into a dual carriageway road supporting two-way traffic flow. Further infrastructure improvements include the introduction of new public parking and vehicle turning areas where existing carriageways become redundant as a result of the updated layout.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council (and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways), recently visited Cwm Cynon Industrial Estate with representatives from Walters Group and Sisk Group.
He said: “The Mountain Ash Cross Valley Link has long been an aspiration for the local community, and by announcing the contractor for the main part of the scheme the Council has showed that real progress is being made to make it a reality.
“We are very pleased that Walters Group and Sisk Group are on board for this scheme in a joint venture, and we look forward to working with them on this vitally-important project ” which is due for completion by 2020.
“The scheme will vastly improve traffic flow on the A4059/B4275 corridor, as well as traffic in and around Mountain Ash at peak times. I”m looking forward to seeing the progress made by Walters-Sisk in the coming weeks and months as they deliver this vitally-important project.”
Ramboll will be working with the Walters-Sisk JV to deliver the detailed design over the next few months with construction works due to start in mid 2018.
