PROJECT OUTLINE

The City of Cardiff is the capital city of Wales and is the largest and busiest city in the principality.
This contract was a major refurbishment of existing street lighting on both major and minor routes within the boundaries of the City and County of Cardiff. Replacement of the failing existing concrete lighting column within the 57 week contract period was of the highest priority to the client.
The work had to be carried out with the minimum of disruption and inconvenience to road users and pedestrians. The roads on which the work was undertaken are some of the busiest in Wales, despite this, the work was completed without incident and to time.

PROJECT DELIVERY

Walters were awarded the contract by competitive tender within the South East Wales Highways Framework It was necessary to work closely with the Client and our specialist subcontractor to meticulously programme and plan the works, such that they could be executed with the minimum effect on traffic and local residents, due to the volume and locations of work involved.
The safety of the travelling public and pedestrians was central to all work considerations, with bespoke traffic management arrangements being developed and implemented at all work locations. This required a variety of measures including rolling lane closures, night time only working where necessary due to traffic flows and evening working where noise effects on local residents were an added concern.
Restrictions on contract completion dates required that column replacement took place at an average of over 30 columns per week at numerous locations throughout the city. Close liaison between all parties” ensured smooth and efficient progress and the project was completed to programme and to the complete satisfaction of the Client and public.
