We undertook precise concrete repairs to the existing weir structure which had become damaged and cracked in several places. We used a specialist readymix mortar designed for marine and in-river applications.

IN RIVER WORKING

We developed a detailed temporary works arrangement for the in-river working, which was submitted as part of our FRAP application and approved by NRW for use.

PROJECT OUTLINE

As part of NRW Civil Engineering Framework Agreement, Walters were engaged to undertake the base repair and replacement of this remote gauging station in Cwmystwyth, Ceredigion – close to the centre point of Wales. An important part of the works was ensuring we minimised our impact on the environment including physical disruption to the river channel, pollution prevention, ecological mitigation and re-using as much waste material within our works as possible to reduce the carbon footprint of the works. Walters have an excellent track record of delivering works for NRW of this type – complex in-river civil engineering in remote and sensitive locations. In fact, we have delivered 12 similar projects since the framework commenced in 2016.

PROJECT DELIVERY

We mobilised our highly experienced team of environmental contracting civil engineers to lead delivery of this 25 weeks project. We worked collaboratively with NRW and their designer – AECOM – to undertake pre-start surveys (otters, water voles, bats, invasive species), prepare a Flood Risk Activity Permit and finalise all quality, safety, health and environmental compliance documentation. The works were ultimately delivered 2 weeks ahead of schedule and on budget. All works were carried out in-house using self-delivery resource with the exception of specialist building work to the new GRP gauging station which included solar panel installation.
