Project Outline

The Fforch Nest wind farm is located 4kms to the north of the village of Glynogwr and to the north west of Gilfach Goch. The site is located on flat, upland mountain plateau between Cwm Ogwr Fawr to the west and Cwm Ogwr Fach to the east.

The site spans the Bridgend County Borough and Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough areas (and lies adjacent to the Pant y Wal windfarm).

The project was originally developed and permitted by RWE Npower, it was subsequently acquired and built out by Pennant Walters in 2011

Project Delivery

The wind farm comprises 11 Nordex N90 2.5MW turbines, which are 70m to the hub and 115m to the tip. Situated on a steep upland site with boggy ground all around, a number of geostabilising techniques were used to provide access and operational safety.

The site can produce up to 27.5MWe, which is the equivalent of the energy required to supply 19,000 homes.

Nordex provide an operation and maintenance service and Pennant Walters provide site management and reporting services. Walters UK assumed the role of principal contractor, while Powersystems Ltd Grid Connection made it possible to feed into the National grid via Western Power Distribution. Funding was provided by Nordex Equity Investors, Pennant Walters Ltd, Hastings Capital and Kfw The wind farm became operational in mid-2013.
