Ffos Las Racecourse

By June 2009 the Ffos Las Racecourse was opened, the first in the UK constructed specifically for such a purpose since 1927. Now a profitable race venue, providing valuable local employment and a centre for tourism in the area.

Commercial and Community Benefits

The adjacent development is already becoming a thriving, vibrant, local community – with an hotel, pubs and restaurants supporting both the venue and local needs.

PROJECT OUTLINE

Between 2002 and 2004, a team of highly qualified technical consultants prepared a comprehensive Environmental Statement for the redevelopment of the former Ffos Las opencast mine site near Trimsaran in Carmarthenshire. Formerly one of Europe”s deepest opencast mines (yielding millions of tonnes of coal), the proposed development was for a new race course, residential properties and a new hotel, extending in full to some 600 acres.

PROJECT DELIVERY

In 2006, planning permission was obtained from Carmarthenshire County Borough Council for a proposed leisure and residential mixed use. The site reclamation works commenced in 2007. The site was transformed with miles of drainage, leading to lagoons to store rainwater and run-off for onwards irrigation. The greening continued with habitat creation and reclamation for many returning species.
