AT-A-GLANCE:
  • COMMENCEMENT DATE – DECEMBER 2013
  • DURATION AT PRESENT – 5 YEARS
  • ANNUAL TONNAGE – 4.5 MILLION TONNES
  • PRIMARY AGGREGATE – LIMESTONE

Building upon our load and haul successes with Tarmac and Aggregate Industries, we successfully bid and were awarded the contract with Hanson Aggregates. Since 2013 we have been their load and haul partner at their flagship operation in Somerset. The operation produces in excess of 5 million tonnes of limestone annually delivering by road and rail.

Through our experience in load and haul contracts and TUPE we have been able to create and maintain another great relationship, which has seen a year on year improvement on production volumes.

Whatley Quarry (near Frome in Somerset) plays significant role in providing limestone, not just into the local market, but also into London by a dedicated rail link and to the nearby Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station project by road and rail

The commencement of the contract saw a significant investment by Walters Plant with our partners at Caterpillar supplying the principal equipment on site, comprising CAT 992 Loading Shovels, CAT 390 excavator, 777 Rigid Dump trucks and other items of smaller auxiliary equipment.

The equipment is fully utilised to deliver more than 4.5 million tonnes per annum of limestone to the Client”s primary crusher on a continuous choke feed basis over two shifts. Our site management team is fully integrated with our Client”s Team on site and actively participates in the running of the quarrying operations. It’s a significant site covering some 120 hectares,  with the majority of the rock produced subsequently crushed for concrete, pre-cast concrete products and asphalt (produced by on-site plant running 24hrs)

The contract (once again) involved the smooth transfer of employees from an incumbent contractor (under TUPE regulations) and the subsequent recruitment of further new employees from the local area.

Through the commitment of Hanson and Walters to the contract, our partnership has developed and grown in strength.
