PROJECT OUTLINE

Llantarnam  School (Comprehensive) buildings became redundant following construction of a new High School in the area, the former site was bought by Barratt Homes with consent for residential development.

Llantarnam School Demolished

Barratt quickly appointed trusted contractor Walters to demolish the sprawling complex of buildings which included education blocks, a leisure centre (including 25m swimming pool) and a 15m high clock tower.

PROJECT DELIVERY

Prior to demolition, all asbestos-containing materials were removed and the buildings were soft stripped of all internal fixtures and fittings. Each structure was then systematically demolished in a controlled manner by Walters highly skilled demolition operatives. Walters used company-owned plant and equipment to complete the works, including a specialist high-reach demolition machine for various high structures on the site.

All slabs and foundations were removed and over 6,000m³ of hard arisings from the works were processed and crushed by Walters own mobile crushing plant. The resultant material was left in tidy stockpiles on site, for re-use as temporary hard-standings and haul roads in the follow-on redevelopment works.

Llantarnam School Site Reprofiled

Finally, Walters reprofiled the site using specialist GPS guided bulldozers, in order to achieve the level requirements for the new development. 5,000m³ of soil was excavated, filled, compacted and independently tested in full compliance with the contract specification. The project was completed to budget and within the allocated programme period – much to the delight of Barratt Homes.
