Local residents and businesses were kept informed of progress and milestones throughout the duration of the project by means of a newsletter.
Dust, noise and vibration were monitored throughout, ensuring that environmental nuisance factors were never an issue in this town centre location.
RCT Council Team Leader for the project, Andrea Virgo, stated:
“The demolition was carried out with the minimum disruption to the local community. It has been a pleasure working with the team (Walters) on this commission.”
PROJECT OUTLINE
The challenge in this instance involved the controlled deconstruction of the remaining reinforced concrete shopping centre structure in the heart of Pontypridd town centre, whilst ensuring that the day-to-day use of the surrounding road and footpath network were not interrupted at any time. 300m of permanent steel hoarding was required to be erected around the site to secure the perimeter. Asbestos containing materials were present and the building required extensive internal soft strip out. The structure required controlled deconstruction and slab and foundation removal to facilitate future redevelopment of the site. Over 6,000m3 of reinforced concrete arisings required processing to a 6F grading to form a new development plateau.
PROJECT DELIVERY
All deliveries and collections to and from the town centre location were planned and arranged to avoid peak traffic and footfall periods. Extensive utility service investigations were undertaken around the site perimeter, to ensure that the 300m of permanent hoarding were installed into the town centre footpaths without damage or interruption to any services. Following soft stripout and asbestos removal by Walters operatives, the remaining reinforced concrete structure was carefully deconstructed by Walters experienced demolition team using company owned plant, equipment and specialist hydraulic attachments. 6,000m3 of reinforced concrete demolition arisings were then crushed by Walters own crushing plant.
