PROJECT OUTLINE

Windrush Place is an exciting new development close to the picturesque market town of Witney in the beautiful Oxfordshire Cotswolds. The site is less than two miles from the centre of Witney with its historic Cotswold stone buildings and pretty River Windrush making for a spectacular backdrop. The development includes the construction of approximately 1000 new family homes, a primary and a secondary school, a care home, a shopping centre, and new link roads to the adjacent A40 and town centre.

Renowned home builders – Bloor Homes, Persimmon Homes and Bovis Homes – formed a Consortium to deliver the development, with White Young Green (WYG) appointed to project manage the scheme on their behalf.  The Consortium approached Walters to undertake significant earthworks at short notice to ensure that the build programme was not interrupted and the project remained on track.

PROJECT DELIVERY

Walters first task was to excavate and relocate 45,000m3 of stockpiled subsoil material from an area of land designated for ‘employment’ to facilitate the sale of this land for development. Following the success of this operation, the Consortium appointed Walters to undertake the remainder of the sitewide earthworks and reprofiling.

The second phase of the works saw Walters excavate attenuation ponds and use the arisings to form an acoustic bund next to the A40 dual carriageway. Significant temporary works were installed to manage surface water and silt to ensure that the lagoon excavation works could continue throughout the winter months without any pollution incidents. Walters formed sports pitch areas and landscape bunds, and crushed site arisings to produce 6F2 material under a WRAP Protocol for re-use in the development.

The project was a huge success in resolving an earthworks problem for the Consortium allowing them to continue unrestricted with their build programme.
