PROJECT OUTLINE

Augean are a leading UK operator of sustainable, compliance-led, waste recycling, recovery, treatment & disposal services. When they required extensive civil engineering works to upgrade their Avonmouth treatment facility, they turned to Walters to deliver a solution which ensured that the impact on their day-to-day operation was minimised and that access to the on-site weighbridge was maintained.

The works involved the renewal of the concrete spine road through the centre of the plant – including all associated remediation, formation and drainage works – as well as the repair of numerous reinforced concrete bund walls which provided primary and secondary containment for the various treatment tanks and silos on site.

It was imperative to Augean that the plant remained operational throughout, requiring Walters to develop an innovative phased approach to delivery.

PROJECT DELIVERY

Walters worked closely with the client team to develop a plan which saw the works constructed in 4 consecutive phases to ensure that disruption was minimised and access was maintained to critical areas of the site at all times.

The existing failed concrete road was broken out, processed to a Type 1 specification and re-used in the formation of the new spine road. Contaminated ground was removed off-site to other treatment facilities within the Augean Group. Geogrids and geotextiles were placed in the subbase formation to provide a sound base for the new concrete road.

In order to expediate preparation and curing times, Walters value engineered the use of a rapid curing concrete (Toproc) which resulted in the concrete road areas reaching the required strength within 48hrs allowing areas of the plant to re-open to full loading in the shortest possible time and minimising downtime for the client.

Walters also undertook concrete repairs to numerous reinforced concrete containment bund walls throughout the site using innovative concrete repair techniques.

The works were completed on time and to the clients budget leaving Augean Site Manager for the Avonmouth facility – Tim Young – to summarise: “Major civils works undertaken on hazardous waste processing site, whilst keeping the site largely operational. Very good co-operation between Walters and site”
